Science

If you are like me, science in the Elementary years is not always at the top of the list. Thankfully, God made "science" all around us! On the days that we never get to the actual science book, my kids are still finding ways to enjoy and learn about "science".

I think nature is a favorite subject around here. This year we are using Apologia's Zoology 1 about flying creatures.

We did get to our lesson today and the kids did a nature scavenger hunt in the backyard. We plan to take our list to the park tomorrow to find more things that are on the list.

Some things we enjoy doing anytime, not just "school time" is reading Christian Liberty Nature Readers. They are very intersting stories about insects and animals in nature.

Another favorite is anything written by Thornton W. Burgess. Wonderful, fun stories that teach children about birds and animals.

My kids keep a nature notebook and draw pictures of things they find in nature. We have had a guest living next door to us eating apples from the apple tree. We live in the city, so it is very funny see this right in the next yard.

We can't decide if it is a groundhog or a woodchuck. When we see things like this, we get the notebook out and The Handbook of Nature Study and draw what we see.

Well, I guess my eight year old decided what she thought it was. :)

Did you know that those noisy bugs that you hear in the trees in the late summer are called cicada bugs? Did you know that those yucky shells on the trees are theirs? Did you know that they spend 17 years in the ground before they climb up and shed their skin on the tree? I didn't know that! I was always told that they were locust shells.

Btw, I love their summer sound!
